Monday Night is Quiz Night

Why “for the craic, not the anorak”?

…and aren’t all pub quizzes meant to be fun?

Well, the fact is, for many people pub quizzes aren’t fun; they’re daunting. They like the idea of a quiz, and they like their memories scratched, without having to have an encyclopedic knowledge.

At The Three Tuns quiz you won’t get those “who scored the winning goal in the 1956 FA cup final?” or “what’s the 34th element on the periodic table?” type questions.

We’re the quiz for people who MAY have glanced at the news this week, MAY have a passing interest in David Attenborough or Brian Cox shows, MAY have read some classic literature or watched the movies when they’re on the telly…

As a result, e’re certainly not the most taxing quiz out there, because it’s not really about the competition. It’s about the banter, the occasional heckle, and the joining together with people from 18 to 80.

So when we say there are no prizes worth having, we mean it. Though we have just introduced “The Quiz Night Sack O’Shite”, filled to the brim with random crap whose only purpose is to generate a fleeting sense of achievement and immediate bewilderment. Will it be a knock-off Nerf pistol? a bag of sour sweets to make your tongue blue? A dog toy with a very irritating squeak?

To sum up the Sack O’ Shite, if there’s anything in there you’ve always wanted, sort your life out!

How does it work?

Hamsters. It runs entirely on hamsters.

Oh. The format.

Well, there’s 5 rounds of 5 general knowledge questions. There’s pretty much always a “Film and Television” round. One week it may be movie Doctors, the next TV cats. If you don’t watch TV it’s only 5 questions*- you’ll get through it.

Then there may be a round on Literature (that’s a posh word for books). There may be one on Food & Drink. Or Animals. An audio “Whose voice is this?” round perhaps. There’s always an “In the news in the last seven days” round.

Then have a ten minute break; inspect the plumbing, inhale some nicotine, treat yourself to a Toastie or refresh your ale.

Seeing that we’re known as a music pub, there’s the music round. Like earlier, it is 5 rounds of 5 music questions. Maybe a round on “Musicians named David”, “Name the Disney Movie from the song”, “Musical Siblings”. Every week it’s different…
except the always infuriating “Opening Lyrics Round”.

The questions will mostly all be things that at least SOMEBODY on your team will have in their head. Somewhere in the distant recesses.

About 1/3 of the questions are things the younger people will likely know. About 1/3 are questions that the more senior people might know. And then there’s the rest, random stuff from across the various categories. Albert’s probably never heard of Dua Lipa. Katy’s probably never heard of Freddie and The Dreamers.

And finally, a pub quiz of course wouldn’t be a pub quiz without a picture round. So here’s a few previous ones.

A Three Tuns picture round featuring Newcastle and Gateshead landmarks.

Why not check the Facebook announcement every Monday afternoon to see the last week’s picture round?
